WatchWatch
At some point I’ll get around to flipping a coin to pick either flash or html 5. Decisions. Decisions. But for now, it’s a repeat of Jan. 13’s audio slide post - the HTML 5 version.   I spoke with New York street photographer Steve Hill a while ago about his process and thoughts on privacy rights, etc. Steve shoots candids and portraits. Here’s an audio slide I produced...

I spoke with New York street photographer Steve Hill a while ago about his process and thoughts on privacy rights, etc. Steve shoots candids and portraits. Here’s an audio slide I produced based on that conversation. Thanks to the Kettle of Fish on Christopher Street where this recording happened. Creative Commons music “Upsurge” is by Jonah Dempcy of Cheshire Label. ...

2012: What's Ahead
I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this street photographer’s post, but I’m glad I did as 2011 winds down and I look to the year ahead. 2011 was the year I carried my camera almost everywhere, the year the camera became an extension of my right arm, the year I found myself on the streets over and over again, the year the streets accompanied me through my highs and lows. This post...

Reflective Tunes
I’m a big fan of audio slides and also a music lover. If you’re cut from the same cloth, you’ll enjoy this touching New York Times piece that pays homage to musicians lost this year including Nate Dogg, Heavy D, Amy Winehouse, and Gil Scott-Heron. The slide isn’t only nostalgic, but a reminder that we affect one another whether it’s through the arts or other talents....

Haunted
…If I stand in front of something, instead of arranging it, I arrange myself. - Diane Arbus  No disagreements here. I love to move about when photographing in an attempt to find that sweet spot. I captured this image today with the use of natural light and a silver reflector. Love how the subject, a recent New York University graduate and aspiring actress, looks slightly possessed and...

The 1-2-3 shot
What’s a person to do when the right amount of natural light streams through a canopy of trees at Prospect Park at high noon? You position your friend, Miss Jhane, for a quick photo shoot.

Smiling Eyes
Prospect Park, Brooklyn 2011 I aimed my camera at this young woman standing outside Prospect Park, and asked her to not smile. She got one over on me and did so with her eyes and that itsy-bitsy dimple that just wouldn’t fade even for a sec.

NY Art. Just appreciate it.
Thespian guised as battered hooker. Stars in mystery performed outside. Convincing, eh?

View From My Soap Box
I love photographing people whether on the streets (candid or with permission), or in studio settings such as this photo. I find that even when subjects try to conjure their on-camera persona, a sliver of their self slips out. I like to shoot in between those moments of concealment. These days I find myself looking for something a little more real - something more tangible than the typical...

Vintage Never Wears
This is from a shoot I did for Aingeel.Z.com. I didn’t plan to go with a vintage photographic finish, but I gave it a try and fell in love.

Icon on 14th Street
Running into the iconic Louis Mendes just made my day or rather night. My friend and I rounded Seventh Avenue and spotted Mr. Mendes eating ice cream (he said it was his dinner) at the corner of 14th Street. It was quite the coincidence since his name popped up in a conversation we had earlier. We were like two school girls. We squealed and jumped and acted all kinds of crazy. Then he said,...

Cuteness at the Market
I found this adorable subject at the Dekalb Market in downtown Brooklyn. You gotta admit she’s super cute. To be courteous and because I wanted a more posed image, I asked the mother for permission to photograph. She obliged and I snapped away.

For the love of hair
I love shooting random strangers on random streets. There’s a never-ending newness to these shoots. In a matter of seconds you have to figure out how best to shoot your subject. And, in this case, my subject made the logistics of angles, blah, blah, blah, pretty simple. She was confident and in love with her hair. I can’t blame her.

WatchWatch
This story just doesn’t get old for me. Check out the trailer on the upcoming Vivian Maier documentary. Maier’s the obscure street photographer who worked as a nanny. She died in 2009 at the age 83.  A real estate agent, John Maloof, discovered her images at a thrift auction house in Chicago. He is archiving her work.
